bead soup – reveal, sort of

This year’s Bead Soup Blog Party challenge is all about love & heart!

Lori Anderson – the mastermind behind Bead Soup – designated the theme of this swap to send something treasured to another, to spread the kindness and love, “… to feel like a true giving of the heart. Paying love forward to a person you may not even know.” What a sweet sentiment.

Our partner packages were to be shipped out on Valentine’s day (Was this a coincidence? I think not!)

So, what did I send my partner? A treasured polymer clay Heart focal piece by Anastasia of Dreams & Elements. I knew as soon as Lori announced her theme, that this was the piece – that it fit the theme perfectly – and that it was meant to be passed on …

IMG_2802

(and included with the polymer clay heart, were a few other little pieces to help get the creative flow going …  some turquoise chips, beautiful wooly wire, twilight cultured potato pearls, tiny pyrite hearts (I sense a trend here!), black & cream lampwork spacer beads by Burnt Glass Studio, vintage tribal tube beads and some vintage khaki glass beads)

Normally I would have written a whole separate post earlier, to introduce my partner Claire Fabian of Saraccino – to tell you that she loves nature, organic textures and found objects – whose style is tribal and has an ancient vibe – that creating helps her de-stress from her day job doing research in Leipzig, Germany – that she creates the most wonderful, earthy, organic pieces (just one look at her instagram feed and you’ll see what I mean!) … and to share what I had received … but unfortunately, her package to me may have opted to take the scenic route for now … to travel around and have an adventure of it’s own … to see what is to be seen in this beautiful world of ours! My hope is that once it has finished it’s walk-about, it will decide to find it’s way here, to it’s new home, and that I can share it with you then.

In the meantime, still wanting to be a part of the party and to play along, I’ve chosen to create some pieces using other items that I have been hoarding for some time … vintage and upcycled coins. They are mostly from around Europe (including some from trips to Germany – where Claire is from), and include some amazing coin beads made by my previous bead soup partner and friend Niky Sayers. Since our pairing in 2014 – I have commissioned Niky a few times, to make clasps for a series of Canadian (and American) penny wrap bracelets, and she has so graciously gifted me special treats (wonderful buttons and beads) along the way – all of which I have collected and admired for years – squirreling them away – waiting for a special moment to use them, and guess what?! This is it! What a perfect opportunity to do them justice.  🙂

tassel---coin-necklaces-20

I used three of Niky’s coin beads – a Canadian penny, a sweet wren British farthing, and an Irish peacock penny (!) in these colourful tassel necklaces.

Loving the bohemian/gypsy/hippie vibe …  I also made a few more necklaces  …

tassel---coin-necklaces-3

… using my old, hoarded coins – German pfennigs, French centimes, a Dutch guilder and a Cuban centavos – doming and hole punching each to create the start of the focal piece.

tassels-webcopy

I handmade each of the tassels using various colours of embroidery floss, and then embellished them all with a mixture of either rhinestones, amethyst beads, moss agate, aventurine, turquoise, copper or seed beads and brass chain to create a little bit of an accent and add to the folksy feel.

tassel---coin-necklaces-9

I just love all of the bright colours (and apparently, so does my cat, Loco – I actually caught him carrying one off after I had set them all up to be photographed and left to get my camera!)

tassel---coin-necklaces-4

I have not heard from Claire since she received her goodies, but I hope that she’s had a chance to create – and am really looking forward to what she does with her bead soup mix! Let’s go have a look at her site to find out …   🙂

And to see the rest of the Bead Soup participants (and there are A LOT!), have a look at the end of this (our amazing hostess – Lori‘s) post for the full list  …   or see below ↓↓↓  (you might just want to grab a cup of coffee first, and then sit back, relax and admire all of the awesome creativeness!)

Thank you so much to Lori, for creating, organizing and continuing on with her Bead Soup Blog Party!

Enjoy!

Bead Soup Blog Party 2017

After a short (2 year) hiatus, the Bead Soup Blog Party will once again be in full swing! I’m so excited to be back as a part of the original bead swap, and love what the host, Lori Anderson has chosen as a theme …

roselicious

According to Lori,

“The reason I chose this BSBP to be a Bead Hoarders edition is because 2016 was made with not much beauty and a whole lot of horrible. A crazy election no matter which side you were on; horrific events throughout the world; deaths of many icons …”

“… I would like to start 2017 by opening our hearts to hope and beauty and true gift-giving. I don’t want people to send just anything, but something they love and would imagine brightening the day of someone …”

“… I want this to feel like a true giving of the heart. Paying love forward to a person you may not even know.”

Especially in light of recent events, I can’t think of a better theme than that!                    Stay tuned for good things to come 🙂

Bead Peeps design challenge reveal

In long anticipation, the day has finally come! The day that I can share with you the results of the bead peeps swap ‘n hop challenge! (a refresher course for those interested … Robin Kae Reed of Artistry Handcrafted Bead Designs sent me an enormous collection of bits and bobs, gears and glass beads, metal blanks & key bits, gemstones and jewels  … the list goes on and on … )

The biggest challenge wasn’t necessarily in what/how to create something out of the mix, but rather … trying to find enough time to create all of the ideas floating around in my head! Even at … 20 … pieces, there is still plenty of inspiration left over to continue on working for weeks to come!

(*warning* this is going to be a long post, so feel free to just peruse the photos, if you feel so inclined!😉 )

And now … on with the show!

#1 & 2     Steampunk Stitched Hearts … using the brass heart focal pieces that Robin embossed, I first domed them a little bit to create some depth, and then stitched a front & back piece together using bronze wire.

steampunk-stitched-heart-necklace-3

#3 – 9     A whole Space Galaxy Collection ~ consisting of 7 different little planets made into choker necklaces … the first two are again using embossed component focal pieces, this time it is the round blanks that I domed and added a textured silver ring and some round brass wire, or flattened pewter wire, to create a semblance of Saturn’s rings.

IMG_1036

The next three are made from some of the gears (also domed!) and one of the lovely large jasper pendant stones. I was so sad to find that the beautiful gemstone was chipped on one side, but still hoping to use it because of the colour being so rich and luxurious – I decided to add to the rustic appeal and chip it some more … placing it in a ziplock bag and crushing the stone to be able to create the “space rocks” encaged within the gears for the necklaces in the first image, and to construct the faux druzy pendant for the necklace in the second! While it wasn’t exactly how I meant to treat a stone of that size, it ended up getting a second (and third, and fourth) life!

The last two planets round out the collection and are also made from gears that have been domed, with a few added embellishments from my own stash.

All of the space galaxy planets are secured onto handmade leather chokers with an extender chain at the back clasp and a tiny star charm to unite the whole look.

I have never done a lot of doming before, and I have to say, I’m having fun with the technique!

Here is the entire galaxy all together …

IMG_1059

#10     Fairy / Bird House pendant necklace – featuring the fairy door focal pendant Robin sent, which I patina painted and added the vintage bird image inside.

* fun fact … I also used a couple of sweet lampwork headpins made by Faye Wolfenden from a previous bead swap a few years ago with the czech glass trumpet bead flowers to help create the enchanted look.

#11     Red Jasper focal pendant necklace – highlighting the lovely deep red gemstone (which I am only guessing is red jasper?) are some small brass filigree pieces to create a hint of victorian vintage.

#12     Gypsy Bohemian long free spirit necklace with turquoise, copper, brass & lovely lavender gemstone – featuring the copper teardrops and another lovely gemstone from Robin. I’m not sure what type it is … such a soft purple, could it be ametrine? Maybe purple lace agate? Either way … it is paired with leather, natural brass and turquoise seed beads for an earthy, hippie feel.

#13 & 14     Steampunk Victorian Key necklaces – Robin sent a few cool vintage – inspired keys, and these are 2 of them 🙂  … adorned with some steampunk elements and rhinestone & czech glass beads for added glamour.

#15     Amethyst Nugget necklace – among the different gemstones Robin sent, was this beautiful chunk of raw amethyst! I love the different purples in amethyst (and it’s my birthstone, too!). This piece was really out of my scope … pushing the boundries a bit, as I have never tried crochet, nor incorporated a netting around a focal piece before. Still a beginner at getting the knots nice and evenly spaced, but thought I’d include this piece as well.

amethyst-nugget-necklace-2

And finally …

#16 – 20     Floral paperclip bookmarks – the mother of pearl (?) flowers Robin sent were the basis of these pretty almost Victorian-like pagekeepers …

Okay – whew! You made it to the end! (thank you for sticking around!) And … Thank you so much, Robin, for such a wonderful, endless, assortment of goodies and inspiration!

Also … thank you, so much – Linda Anderson, for hosting such a grand event, and for all of your hard work behind the scenes, pairing everyone up! It is an honour to be a part of it all.

Now … I can’t wait to see what Robin came up with, from the mix I sent her!  Interested? Let’s go check it out at Artistry Handcrafted Bead Designs 🙂

And, after that … do you need more?!  Hopefully you aren’t too tuckered out, because there is plenty to see from all of the other gifted participants! A list of links to all of their amazing creations can be found on Linda Anderson’s From the Bead Board blog. See you there!

getting creative

Time to get the creative flow going … and away we go!

Remember Robin Kae Reed? I introduced you all to her a few weeks ago here – after the Bead Peeps Swap n Hop partner pairings were announced?  Welllll … her secret stash of goodies just arrived and holy cow! So much to choose from – where does one even start?!

bead-mix-from-Robin

Gorgeous gemstones, and glass beads, and metal blanks, and keys, and gears, and focal pieces (check out that fairy door!), and, and, and …  so many ideas, so little time! Thank you so much Robin!

and now the fun begins 🙂

If you were wondering what Robin gets to work with … this is what she received … I sense a bit of a pattern here … gemstones, glass beads, metal pieces, gears … you know what they say … great minds think alike 😉

bead-mix-sent-to-Robin

It was really hard to part with Anastasia’s (Dreams and Elements) polymer clay owl focals, but I just knew Robin loved owls and that they would go to a good home 😉

(and she has already proven that correct and made an amazing necklace with one of them already that she’s given me a sneak peek of … it’s awesome – just you wait and see!)

The big reveal date is set for May 15th!

Sweet Treats

A little Bead Peeps Swap N Hop update … A few weeks back, I introduced you to my bead swap partner Debra Jeffries of Debra’s Divine Designs … now, let me show you all of the amazing bounty she sent!

bead-peeps-swap-from-Debra-Jeffries

So many goodies, so little time!

I can not even begin to describe the feelings I had when opening Debbie’s packages … each so wonderfully wrapped, like perfect little christmas presents, and with such super cool containers!  Included are not one, not two, but 3 of her incredible handmade, recycled butterfly wing pendants (plus an extra amazing bonus one for me, as well!), some gorgeous peacock blue & lime green glass tear beads, beautiful sea sediment jasper beads, lovely yellow lampwork beads, black moonstone, sparkly crystal beads, crackle glass rock crystal, antique silver & brass components, lots of silver (jump) rings, chain, cord, seed beads … oh my, the list is extensive!

bead-peeps-swap-from-Debbie---goodies

As if that weren’t already plentiful enough … Debbie added so many extra goodies as well! Yummy treats like … chocolate covered pretzels, werther’s toffees & choco toffees, and cool items like … chalkboard signs (perfect for the next art show display!), butterfly washi tape, owl notecards, handy see-thru pouches and a colour yourself ipad case!

I have honestly never been so spoiled in my life (and I have been spoiled by some amazing people!)  Saying a mere Thank You to Debbie is hardly enough. I will have to come up with something better …

I have so many ideas already, of pieces to create …. there aren’t enough hours in the day to get them all made! But here’s hoping to showcase a few of them by the big reveal date of May 2!  Stay tuned …

If you were curious about what I sent Debbie, and if this teaser was too cryptic of an image … have a look below 🙂

While the purpose of this swap is to stretch your swap-ee’s  boundaries past their normal comfort zone – I didn’t want to stray too far … so .. this …

sent-to-debra---distorted

… became … sent-to-Debra

… this!

Sensing a theme here?  If you’ve ever had a chance to view some of Debbie’s work, you will have noticed how she creates the most stunning jewellery out of butterfly and moth wings. Hence this selection of goodies … chosen to go with how enamoured she is with butterflies! I centered around some hand made (by me) pendants – consisting of two mixed media collage square focals and one handstamped copper & brass butterfly tag (with the saying “your wings already exist all you have to do is fly”).

Included along with the pendants were … some striped lampwork cubes by River Rock Artglass, a strand of prehnite gemstone cubes, a Vintaj floral brass embellishment, cultured potato pearls, swarovski butterfly beads & bicones, a thai silver butterfly toggle clasp, a patina’d round toggle clasp, floral lampwork beads, some brown (and dark green – not shown) leather lacing and a hand dyed silk ribbon (along with a few other embellishments thrown in for fun!). I sure hope she likes her surprise pack, and I can not wait to see what she ends up creating! We’ll all find out May 2nd 🙂

a Swap N Hop teaser …

Can you guess what’s inside?!

A quick teaser photo of the goodies getting ready to be shipped out to Debra Jeffries – for the Bead Peeps Swap N Hop which was introduced last week here on the blog!

A clearer vision & details of it’s contents will be posted soon (once Debra has had a chance to see it all first!) … be back soon

bead soup blog party reveal

Oh … so exciting!   Today is the day … the BIG REVEAL for all those participating in Lori Anderson’s 8th annual Bead Soup Blog Party! I can.not.wait. to see what everyone has designed and created!

My beautiful bead soup (if you’ll remember, from the lovely Niky Sayers) has been simmering and stewing away for a few weeks now.  It has finally finished percolating, having left a delightful aroma and an amazing array of ideas to create with.

{a reminder of what Niky sent me (isn’t it gorgeous!?) Thank You so much, Niky!! }

bead-soup-2014

With such a beautiful assortment, only a few extra ingredients were added to get things going … and they were;

~ a pinch of Czech glass beads, and copper beads,

~ a splash of leather,

~ a drop of chain,

~ a handful of copper rivets,

~ a pat of fabric bias tape,

~ and a little dash of brass & copper wires.

And the end result?

bead-soup-2014-reveal

Similar to last year, with so many pretty components, I decided to create more than 1 piece to give them all the spotlight they deserve.  (and besides that … there were just so many ideas running around in my head!)  The initial reveal date was set for May 3rd, and by that time, I had created 3 different pieces … a mixed multi media wrap bracelet, a fabric and chain double strand bracelet and a prominent focal pendant necklace.

bead-soup-bracelet1

This mixed multi media wrap bracelet features Niky’s handmade coin clasp up front and centre! It is surrounded by the  polka dot lampwork spacer beads by Laura Sparling, the pearl beads, some added Czech glass trumpet beads and a leather band with copper rivets and accents.

bead-soup-bracelet2

This fabric and chain double strand bracelet features the pink (possibly rose quartz or jade?) round beads surrounded by Liberty of London fabric (in a nod to where this soup originated!) and added natural brass chain & findings.

bead-soup-necklace1

This prominent focal pendant necklace features the stunning lampwork focal by Moogin Beads, Niky’s own fancy head pins tripled up with the focal bead and also used as a design element & connector for the Roman glass bead on top surrounded by an added natural brass ring, and copper findings.

bead soup pieces

Since, the reveal was postponed a week – until now …  a bit of extra time was granted, which gave a little incentive to create a few other items, so for this year’s celebration …  5 pieces materialized out of  my beautiful bead soup (I guess I just wanted as many of the beads to get to go to the bead soup blog party!)

bead-soup-earrings

The newest editions were the butterfly dangle earrings, centered around the beautiful lampwork head pins by Earth Shine Beads, and paired with copper butterfly beads and simple natural brass ear wires.

bead-soup-bracelet-3

And lastly, another multi strand bracelet (hmm … I’m sensing a trend here!)  focusing around Niky’s lentil coin bead and featuring square czech glass beads, liberty of london fabric, purple leather and a mixture of copper and natural brass wire and findings.

bead-soup-2014-bracelet-3

Participating in an event such as this is so incredible.  It is beyond amazing to see the creativity of such a collective group of talented participants – to see what they were sent, and how they chose to work with that to design truly spectacular pieces. It is also so wonderful to receive a package of gorgeous goodies that one would not ordinarily find, and to have been teamed up with a fantastic partner who has now become a new overseas friend 🙂  I can not thank Lori enough for creating/ hosting/organizing such an extraordinary event, and for choosing such a perfect partner to work with! And a huge Thank You to Niky for making this so much fun! I hope you like what became of your beads!

Now … I can’t wait to see what Niky came up with, from the soup I sent her!  Interested?  Let’s go check out Silver NikNats …

Need more!?  To see a list of all of those participating, and their amazing creations, please visit our lovely host – Lori Anderson’s site
